Placer County Election News

The paperwork that candidates can use to reduce or eliminate their filing fees for
the June 5, 2012 Presidential Primary Election will be available from the Placer
County Office of Elections beginning December 30, 2011. The Petition in Lieu of
Filing Fee allows the candidate to collect signatures to be counted toward the
payment of the filing fee. The value of each signature is prorated. For example,
each valid signature filed for a county office will reduce the filing fee by $0.25.
The petition in lieu is optional.

The petition in lieu is issued by the County Elections Office where one files the
Declaration of Candidacy (usually the county of domicile). When a candidate comes
to the Office of Elections, our staff will issue the petition and explain the requirements
for circulators and signers. The last day to file the petition in lieu is February
23, 2012 or the day the candidate is issued nomination papers, whichever comes first.

The following offices will appear on the June 5, 2012 Placer County Presidential
Primary Election Ballot and will have filing fees that can be reduced or eliminated
by circulating Signature in Lieu petitions:

Filing for Office

Candidate filing begins February 13, 2012. The Office of Elections will be open
from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on February 13 for the Lincoln’s Birthday Holiday.
The Office of Elections will also be open on President’s Day (February 20) from
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to accommodate candidates. Candidate filing closes March
9, 2012. If an incumbent fails to file during this time period, candidate filing
will extend 5 days for any candidate except the incumbent and will end on March
14, 2012. When the incumbent files or is ineligible to run for re-election there
will not be an extension of candidate filing for that office.

Candidacy paperwork is obtained from the Office of Elections. The candidate or the
candidate’s representative must come to the Office of Elections in person. The address
for the Office of Elections is 2956 Richardson Drive, Auburn, California. Please
plan your trip to our office during regular business hours, as election law does
not permit us to extend our hours for the purposes of candidate filing. If you are
sending your representative to obtain candidacy paperwork for you, please contact
the Office of Elections first to ensure your representative arrives with the proper
authorization.
