Thanks to a suspicious clerk and observant Placer County Sheriff’s deputies, two young men on a shopping spree using other people’s credit cards were arrested in Auburn Tuesday night. Detectives suspect the pair spent more than $100,000 buying items from El Dorado County to the Bay Area.

Deputies were called to the Auburn BevMo store at 8:30 Tuesday night where suspects Michael Ross, 27, of Folsom, and Vyacheslav Berezenko 23, of Sacramento, were attempting to make a credit card purchase. The clerk was suspicious about the credit card and tried to stall the pair while deputies were en route to the Bell Road store.

The suspects fled before deputies arrived, but patrol deputies saturated the area and located the suspects in the Home Depot parking lot. A search of their car revealed several counterfeit drivers’ licenses and several fraudulent credit cards. The pair had obtained the credit cards in the names of others by stealing mail in Shingle Springs.

Deputies and detectives also found $10,000 worth of merchandise that the suspects had obtained with the credit cards. More receipts revealed that the pair had obtained more than $100,000 worth of merchandise with the fraudulent cards.

Both suspects were booked at the Placer County Jail on charges of identity theft, burglary, grand theft, forgery, conspiracy and making/possessing counterfeit credit cards. Bail is set at $20,000.
