South Lake Tahoe, CA……Signage in the City of South Lake Tahoe has long been a contentious topic among business owners. For some the city sign ordinance is not strict enough and has resulted in a complicated visual assault on the eyes of visitors, while another business owner may tell you the sign ordinance is too strict and has hurt their business as they are unable to attract the eye of visitors.
The city council met on June 27th at a special workshop to review current conditions and hear input from citizens and staff. The staff report suggested some “tweaks” were needed to the current ordinance due to city cut-backs and lack of manpower to enforce fairly. At this same meeting members of the public provided their frustration. Tahoechamber.org CEO, “B” Gorman attended the meeting and recommended that the city come up with a plan that was manageable, whereby they could consistently enforce their policies throughout the community rather than reacting to complaints oftentimes provided by a fellow citizen.
Recognizing the need for more comprehensive input than what was collected the evening of the June 27th workshop, the chamber created a short survey available to South Lake Tahoe City businesses. The survey was emailed to members but can also be accessed by going to www.tahoechamber.org and clicking on the signage survey icon located on the home page. All entries and comments are confidential with responses limited to one per computer.
The survey will close on July 20th and results will be tabulated and presented to City Council on behalf of the local business community at the July 26th council meeting.
