The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a report of a physical family disturbance in the 1800 block of Standing Rock Court in the Virginia Foothills area on Thursday, May 5th at approximately 7:06PM.
Upon arrival, Deputies made contact with a 67 year old female who was in need of medical care. The female told Deputies that she had been battered and choked by a family member. She said Charles Welchert (31 years old) began arguing with her and became extremely angry. She told Deputies the verbal argument all of a sudden turned physical. She explained that Charles proceeded to batter and choke her. During the physical altercation, she attempted to dial 911 but Charles took the phone away and suddenly began destroying items within the residence. She was examined by REMSA Paramedics, and then transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
While at the residence, Deputies made contact with Charles and other family members. Charles cooperated with the investigation. Family members were able to intervene and got Charles to stop the bodily harm from becoming more severe. Charles’ 4 year old son was at the residence during the incident as well.
Charles was arrested and transported to the Washoe County Detention Facility, where he was booked without incident. Charles was booked on the following charges; Attempted Murder (Felony), Domestic Battery by Strangulation (Felony), Elderly Enhancement with the Victim over 65 (Felony), Intercepting an Emergency Call (Gross Misdemeanor), and Endangering a Child (Felony). Charles’ bail is set at $171,500.
