HYDROLOGIC OUTLOOK
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RENO NV
1135 AM PDT WED MAY 4 2011

…SPRING SNOWMELT TO CAUSE EASTERN SIERRA AND WESTERN NEVADA
RIVERS AND STREAMS TO RISE SIGNIFICANTLY THROUGH SATURDAY…

…NO SIGNIFICANT FLOODING EXPECTED…

SNOWMELT DUE TO WARM TEMPERATURES AND MUCH ABOVE AVERAGE SNOWPACK
WILL CAUSE INCREASED FLOWS ON CREEKS…STREAMS…AND RIVERS
IN THE EASTERN SIERRA AND WESTERN NEVADA THROUGH SATURDAY. MUCH
COOLER TEMPERATURES BEGINNING SUNDAY WILL SUBDUE RISES UNTIL THE
MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK…WHEN WARMER WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO CAUSE
RENEWED RISES.

NO SIGNIFICANT FLOODING IS EXPECTED THIS WEEK OR NEXT IN THE REGION.
HOWEVER…THERE MAY BE SOME LOCALIZED VERY MINOR LOWLAND FLOODING
ON SMALL CREEKS AND STREAMS THROUGHOUT THE REGION…ESPECIALLY IN
AREAS BELOW THE MOST ACTIVE SNOWMELT WHICH IS CURRENTLY IN THE
6000 TO 7000 FOOT RANGE IN THE CENTRAL SIERRA.

ALSO…THE WEST AND EAST FORKS OF THE CARSON RIVER ARE EXPECTED TO
BRIEFLY RISE TO NEAR CHANNEL CAPACITY…OR BANKFULL…BY THIS
WEEKEND. SOME VERY MINOR FLOODING OF LOWLANDS AND FARMLAND SHOULD
BE EXPECTED ON THESE RIVERS IN THE CARSON VALLEY ABOVE GENOA THIS
WEEKEND. THIS INCLUDES CENTERVILLE AND MINDEN-GARDNERVILLE. NO
FLOODING OF ROADS OR STRUCTURES IS EXPECTED AT THIS TIME.

THE HIGHEST FLOWS OF THE MELT SEASON ON THE CARSON AND TAHOE BASINS
ARE EXPECTED BY MID MAY…WHILE THE HIGHEST FLOWS ON THE WALKER
BASIN ARE EXPECTED BY EARLY JUNE. THERE WILL BE A HIGHER THREAT OF
FLOODING ON THOSE BASINS AS THE MELT SEASON PROGRESSES.

BASINS WHICH COULD EXPERIENCE FLOODING THIS SPRING IN THE EASTERN
SIERRA NEVADA AND WESTERN NEVADA INCLUDE…

UNCONTROLLED LAKE TAHOE TRIBUTARIES…
UNCONTROLLED TRIBUTARIES OF THE TRUCKEE RIVER ABOVE RENO NEVADA…
EAST FORK…WEST FORK AND MAINSTEM CARSON RIVERS AND TRIBUTARIES
ABOVE LAHONTAN RESERVOIR…
WEST WALKER…EAST WALKER AND MAINSTEM WALKER RIVER AND TRIBUTARIES
ABOVE WEBER DAM…
MONO LAKE TRIBUTARIES…
UPPER OWENS RIVER TRIBUTARIES IN MONO COUNTY…
HUMBOLDT RIVER ABOVE RYE PATCH DAM IN PERSHING COUNTY.

ALL EASTERN SIERRA RIVERS AND STREAMS WILL BE RUNNING VERY COLD…
DANGEROUSLY SWIFT AND TURBULENT THROUGH LATE JUNE. IN ORDER TO
PREVENT DROWNINGS…ANYONE VENTURING NEAR THESE RIVERS AND
STREAMS…INCLUDING RAFTERS…KAYAKERS…SWIMMERS…CAMPERS AND
ANGLERS…SHOULD BE ESPECIALLY VIGILANT OF THE HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS
THEY PRESENT. IT WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT TO ESCAPE THE TURBULENT
WATERS IF YOU FALL IN. DUE TO THE ICY WATER TEMPERATURES…ARMS
AND LEGS WILL BECOME NUMB QUICKLY CAUSING AN INCREASED THREAT OF
DROWNING. AS CHILDREN ARE DRAWN TOWARDS WATER…THEY ARE ESPECIALLY
VULNERABLE AND SHOULD BE MONITORED CLOSELY IF NEAR A RIVER OR
STREAM.
