UPDATE:

Residents who work or go to school on one side of Echo Summit and live on the other will be allowed to use Johnson Pass Lane with a pass issued by Caltrans during the two-week closure slated for May. Only travel to and from school or work will be permitted, according to a statement issued by Caltrans.

Proof of work or school and residence, such as a pay stub, report card or utility bill, will be required to obtain a pass. Access will be strictly limited and enforced by California Highway Patrol, according to the statement.

Passes are NOT required for County employees using a marked county vehicle. If a county employee is using their personal vehicle, a pass IS required.

Passes will be issued from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the following dates: April 21, April 27-28 and May 4-5 at Caltrans South Lake Tahoe Maintenance Yard, 223 Cornelian Drive.

Starting in mid/late April or early May (depending on weather), Caltrans will close U.S. Hwy. 50 at Echo Summit for two weeks to replace the old rock wall with a modern barrier that meets current safety standards and preserves the natural beauty.

The alternate route is a perfect opportunity to experience California’s historic gold country, rural landscapes, rugged river canyons, flower farms, and panoramic vineyards.

The drive adds 35 miles to the trip from Sacramento and is a wonderful opportunity to tour the historic Gold Country of El Dorado and Amador Counties.

Highway 50 remains open to Placerville visitors and all other locations as far east as Sierra at Tahoe Resort. All eastbound traffic will be stopped and screened past Sierra at Tahoe Resort.
