A late season storm dropped 1-2 feet of new snow at Lake Tahoe South Shore (http://www.tahoesouth.com) resorts providing great spring skiing conditions through Easter weekend and beyond. Forecasts call for sunny skies and warm temps in the 50s next week.
The recent system, combined with South Lake Tahoe’s early season snowfall, has put 2010/11 in the record books among the top three snowiest winters since 1970, with the snowpack 181 percent of average according to automated measurements by the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service. Resorts have received 514 – 727 inches allowing skiers and snowboarders some of the best spring conditions in history.
South Lake Tahoe is one of the ultimate spring skiing/riding destinations for families, party-goers, powder hounds and sun worshipers alike. Heavenly, Sierra and Kirkwood are amped for this last push into spring. An impressive winter snowpack, combined with unmatched late-season weather, a laid-back Tahoe vibe and a plethora of indoor and outdoor activities help South Tahoe stand out in the crowd.
Heavenly Mountain Resort has announced its closing date to be April 24. Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort is keeping its bullwheels turning until April 24. Kirkwood Mountain Resort has extended its season an extra week, officially closing on Sunday, May 1. Please note that these dates are tentative and are weather and condition dependent.
SpringLoaded, Heavenly’s annual spring break skiing and riding celebration is April 9 – 23. The weeks are filled with California sunshine, South Shore’s famous spring conditions, the resort’s infamous pond skimming contest and more. Highlights for this year’s event include the Gunbarrel 25, the finals of the Stateline Showdown amateur slopestyle competition and two rounds of pond-skimming. Off the mountain, the party will continue around the clock with concerts from the Cold War Kids and G. Love & Special Sauce at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Details: SpringLoaded.
“I’m ready to work on my spring goggle tan; who’s with me,” asked Carol Chaplin, executive director of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “In South Shore we are known for our unparalleled spring skiing conditions – powder, corn snow and sunshine.”
“The 2010-11 season was one to remember all around the Lake,” said Steve Hemphill, Communications Manager at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort. “Sierra received over 720 inches of snowfall this season giving skiers and riders over 40 powder days, countless face shots, and plenty of smiles.
