Washoe County Budget Manager Darin Conforti accepted the annual Cashman Good Government Award on behalf of Washoe County government at the Nevada Taxpayers Association event recently. The Nevada Taxpayers Association presents this prestigious statewide award to a Nevada public entity that demonstrates transparency in government as well as efficient use of taxpayer dollars. Conforti’s interactive budget model was selected among other statewide entries as it helped the county achieve nearly $10 million in voluntary labor costs concessions with the county’s nine labor unions last year. The interactive budget model is built on ten years worth of county financial history, and allows users to develop scenarios to determine the most effective budget reduction strategies. Washoe County has reduced its budget by $123 million in the last four years in response to declining property and sales tax revenues, and is faced with a $33.5 million deficit again this year.
