he Placer County Board of Supervisors will notice two significant changes Tuesday, Feb. 22 when its reviews the county Housing Authority’s annual plan for operating a federally funded housing voucher program.

The changes are Placer County’s recent designation as a “high-performing” housing authority by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the receipt of 25 additional housing choice vouchers specifically dedicated to helping veterans find affordable housing.

The Housing Authority, a division of the Health and Human Services Department, provides rent assistance to about 250 residents with very low incomes. Many participants are elderly or disabled.

The vouchers allow participants to select their own housing as long as it meets program requirements. The housing choice vouchers generally cover the difference between fair-market rent payments based on HUD standards and the amounts program participants can afford to pay.

“We are pleased to be recognized as a ‘high-performing’ housing authority,” said county Human Services and Housing Authority Director Cheryl S. Davis. “There are many seniors, disabled persons and families in Placer County on our waiting list for help with high housing costs. The designation is important because it increases our chances of receiving more housing voucher funds in the future, such as the special program for veterans.”

If board members approve the plan, it will be submitted for approval by HUD. The Housing Authority is scheduled to receive almost $1.84 million to operate the voucher program for the federal fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.

The Housing Authority’s annual plan is scheduled to be reviewed by the board at 9:20 a.m. Board members will conduct a hearing to receive public comment on the plan before considering whether to approve it.

Tuesday’s board meeting will take place at 9 a.m. in the county Administrative Center at 175 Fulweiler Ave. in Auburn.
