Avalance Hazard Advisory- Crystal Bay, Nevada

If the anticipated winter storm arrives at its projected intensity, avalanches in Crystal Bay, Nevada that could reach houses are highly possible throughout early to mid-Saturday morning, March 19th.

Emergency officials do not anticipate that avalanches will cause any serious damage to homes, but residents are advised that an avalanche potential exists. Should conditions worsen, local public safety officials will issue an Avalanche Warning. Please continue to monitor local media and visit www.washoecounty.us for updates.

Please be aware that when public safety officials issued an avalanche warning to the Crystal Bay area on February 25, 2011 a small avalanche on the southern flank did in fact subsequently occur. That avalanche broke in the new snow with a crown depth of 8″ to 12″ and a “run” of about 360 vertical feet. However, it was possible the northern flank could have come out with a much larger avalanche. Given past experiences this winter season, we strongly advise that residents take these advisories and warnings seriously.
