Welcome the first day of spring by taking part in the annual Spring Equinox Walk through the Labyrinth Garden in Washoe County’s Wilbur D. May Arboretum.

The walk begins at 5:30pm on Sunday, March 20, 2011; the cost is free. Rancho San Rafael Botanical Society volunteer and county librarian Susan Stewart will be on hand to explain the development, use and benefits of labyrinth gardens throughout history. For more information, call: 785-4153.

“Labyrinths have been used for centuries as tools for bringing peace into people’s lives,” Arboretum Horticulturist Bill Carlos said. “Their patterned circuits offer an ideal place for people of all faiths and beliefs to meditate while walking.”

The Labyrinth Garden at the May Arboretum and Botanical Garden is dedicated to victims of violent crime in our community and their loved ones. The garden project was initiated by the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office, Nevada Attorney General’s Office and Victims in Crisis, Turmoil or Recovery (VICTORY).

The Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Gardens celebrates 25 years as the region’s premier public garden in 2011. The arboretum opened in May 1986 as an outdoor, living museum and educational resource. The gardens illustrate how plant life adapts and survives in the rugged climate between the Sierra Nevada and Great Basin.

The arboretum was made possible with funding from the Wilbur D. May Foundation and receives continued support from the Wilbur D. May Foundation, Rancho San Rafael Botanical Society volunteers and the community at large.
