…COLD WINTER STORM LATE THIS WEEK…

HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE CENTRAL PACIFIC WILL ALLOW AN AREA OF LOW
PRESSURE TO MOVE SOUTH ALONG THE WEST COAST LATER THIS WEEK. THE
SYSTEM WILL PULL COLD CANADIAN AIR INTO THE SIERRA AND WESTERN
NEVADA WHICH WILL DROP TEMPERATURES WELL BELOW NORMAL THIS
WEEKEND.

AHEAD OF THE LOW…THE JET STREAM WILL PUSH OVER THE AREA ON
THURSDAY. THIS WILL INCREASE WINDS OVER THE SIERRA AND WESTERN
NEVADA WITH GUSTS UP TO 50 MPH POSSIBLE IN THE LOWER ELEVATIONS
THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH FRIDAY. SIERRA RIDGE GUSTS COULD REACH
100 MPH.

LIGHT SNOW WILL REACH NORTHEAST CALIFORNIA AND THE NORTHERN SIERRA
THURSDAY AFTERNOON. HOWEVER THE GREATEST POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY SNOW
WILL OCCUR AS COLD FRONT MOVES THROUGH THE REGION BETWEEN THURSDAY
NIGHT AND FRIDAY NIGHT. THERE IS GROWING CONFIDENCE IN
SIGNIFICANT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS IN THE SIERRA WITH SEVERAL INCHES
OF SNOW POSSIBLE ON THE WESTERN NEVADA VALLEY FLOORS. A WINTER
STORM WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR THE SIERRA AND NORTHWEST NEVADA
VALLEYS…PLEASE SEE THE PRODUCT FOR ADDITIONAL DETAILS.

THE CANADIAN AIR WILL BRING VERY COLD TEMPERATURES TO THE SIERRA
AND WESTERN NEVADA. THE COLD AIR MAY COMBINE WITH GUSTY WINDS TO
PRODUCE WIDESPREAD BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW IN THE SIERRA WITH
WIND CHILL VALUES WELL BELOW ZERO. ACROSS WESTERN NEVADA…HIGH
TEMPERATURE ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY MAY STRUGGLE TO REACH 30
DEGREES. LOW TEMPERATURE BY SUNDAY MORNING MAY DROP INTO THE
SINGLE DIGITS FOR WESTERN NEVADA…WITH READINGS WELL BELOW ZERO
FOR THE SIERRA.
