City of South Lake Tahoe Hires New Airport Manager

South Lake Tahoe, CA…The City of South Lake Tahoe is pleased to announce the appointment of John Dickinson to the position of Airport Manager, effective August 1. Dickinson will be responsible for overseeing airport operations, administering the airport work plan, managing the fiscal operations of the airport, and providing recommendations for sustainable airport land use.

Dickinson comes to the City with over 14 years of experience in aviation ranging from airport operations and planning. He began his career in aviation alongside his father in a Piper Cherokee aircraft. After serving ten years in the United States Navy as an Air Traffic Controller, he started his civilian career as the Airport Operations/Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Specialist for Bellingham International Airport. After completing his time in Bellingham, he then transitioned his career to Santa Fe, New Mexico to become the Airport Operations Manager where he supervised all construction and airport operations. In this role, he developed and integrated an Airport Emergency Plan which included conducting tabletop exercises with agencies across the state, assisted with the Taxiway Delta Realignment Project to ensure that the airport was compliant with FAA guidelines for taxiways, and created and revised leases for both general aviation and commercial carriers.

For the past year, Dickinson worked as an Airport Security Program Manager for Denver International Airport. His time in Denver allowed him to grow his career in aviation as he accomplished several multi-million dollar projects, which included a major concourse expansion. He also oversaw all construction and regulatory compliance for airport security and developed and implemented an Airport Security Plan.

Dickinson already enjoys working for the City of South Lake Tahoe. Dickinson stated, “I am extremely excited and appreciate the opportunity to serve as the Airport Manager. I believe that my background in aviation will be an asset as we evaluate existing programs and implement new ones that will enhance the services provided by the airport.”

Dickinson holds a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Science and a minor in Airport Management from Embry Riddle University. He is also completing his master’s degree in Operational Management. He is a Certified Member of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE). As an Air Traffic Controller in the U.S. Navy, he was awarded the Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal for zero mishaps for 60,000 flight operations.

Outside of work, John loves playing golf and traveling with his wife, Lillian and Bernese Mountain dog, George.
