The MOST Program Is Now in Effect in Washoe County

Washoe County, NV…For nearly two decades the Mobile Outreach Safety Team (MOST) has been a part of law enforcement response in northern Nevada. The program was first implemented in October of 2003 by the City of Reno and marries a social worker with a law enforcement officer. The MOST intervention capability provides a more proactive response to the community to attempt to intervene earlier in the mental illness cycle and utilize less costly services while also decreasing the law enforcement calls for service. The main goal of the MOST program is to provide crisis intervention services and jail diversion resources to community members.

Yesterday, The Washoe County Board of County Commissioners approved the transfer of services from The Washoe County Human Services Agency to The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. This was the formal transfer of the program, but MOST clinicians have been riding with Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Deputies on patrol for several months. In the short amount of time, the MOST clinicians have proven invaluable. Their work to reduce the response by Deputies to repeat locations allows them to respond to other calls in their busy shift.
Washoe County Deputies with a MOST clinician can respond to any part of Washoe County and assist other agencies in providing resources to an individual in need. The program is growing, and additional positions are being filled with the goal to have a Deputy and MOST clinician team available during day and swing shifts all year round.
We are excited for this partnership and providing the best service to the community we serve.
