State Route 89 (Monitor Pass) Will Open Today

Markleeville, CA…The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will open State Route 89/Monitor Pass at 12:00 p.m. today (Wednesday, May 11, 2022) after it was closed at noon on Sunday, May 8, 2022, due to snow. Route 108/Sonora Pass and Route 4/Ebbetts Pass remain in winter closure, as crews continue to remove snow and debris from the roads. Both passes could reopen this week, weather and conditions permitting.

Caltrans’ goal always is to have the mountain passes open the Friday prior to Memorial Day weekend. We thank our crews for their hard work to meet this goal and make the roadways safe for the traveling public.

Caltrans reminds motorists to carry chains when traveling in the mountains, and be prepared to stop and install them when highway signs indicate chains are required for your safety. Vehicles without chains are not permitted to enter chain control areas.
