Reno, NV…The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is seeing an increase in Driving Under the Influence (DUI) arrests and bookings at the Detention Facility.
The numbers set forth below include arrests from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department, Nevada Highway Patrol and other agencies who have booked persons at the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. The statistics were generated by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Research and Development Department and may differ slightly from individual agencies’ own data.
Between June 1, 2021 – June 22, 2021, more people have been booked into the Detention Facility for DUI than the entire month of June 2020. So far this month, 139 people have been arrested for DUI. Compare that to 128 DUI arrests last June, and 143 total DUI arrests were made in June of 2019.
Since the beginning of the year 1,203 people have been arrested for DUI. Between January 1, 2020 – May 22, 2020, there were 947 DUI arrests. While 2020 was an anomaly year because of the coronavirus – the arrests so far this year also exceed DUI arrests from 2019. Between January 1, 2019 – May 22, 2019, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility had a total 1,039 DUI bookings.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office reminds those enjoying the return to events this summer, if you are driving — include arrangements to ensure no one will be driving under the influence. A designated driver, phone call to a trusted friend, or a rideshare or taxicab for a ride home is always a person’s best option.
