Stockton, CA… Project Will Upgrade Three Additional Bridges in Alpine County. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will conduct bridge rail upgrades and a bridge replacement project at four locations on State Routes 4, 88
and 89 within forested areas of the Sierra Nevada near Markleeville in Alpine County.

This project will upgrade bridge rails at two bridges – one on Route 4 and one on Route 4/88 – and replace the Markleeville Creek Bridge on SR-89. Another bridge on the old Route 88 will be blocked off for vehicular access but will remain open for pedestrian access.

The bridges were built in the 1930s and 1950s in snowy, mountainous areas and have rails that do not meet current safety standards.

Work is expected to begin on June 28, 2021 and end in fall 2023.

Work will be conducted as follows:

Location 1: State Route 88, West Fork Carson River

• At the top of Woodfords Canyon in a section of Route 88 that is bicycle accessible.

• Existing bridge rail will be replaced, then existing asphalt concrete will be removed from the bridge deck and polyester concrete will be installed, tying into the highway at both ends.

• One-way traffic control is planned, and motorists should expect 10-minute delays.

Location 2: State Route 88, West Fork Carson River

• About a mile east of Location 1 in Shingle Mill Flats on an unnamed local road off Route 88 that ends after approximately 930 feet, this bridge provides access to a local fishing and recreational area and will only be open to pedestrians.

• No traffic impact is anticipated as this bridge is off the alignment of Route 88.

• Both West Fork Carson River Bridge locations are between Picketts Junction and Woodfords.

Location 3: State Route 89, Markleeville Creek

• This bridge on a key route connecting Route 4 and Route 88 in Markleeville will be replaced with a new, wider bridge to meet 8-foot shoulder standards and allow pedestrians and bicyclists to safely cross.

• Riprap as scour mitigation will be installed along the northern bridge abutment.

• Both north and south bridge abutments are within the active creek channel. In-water work will be conducted during the in-water work window (June 1 to October 15).

• Drainage culverts will be replaced.

• One-lane traffic control will be employed during construction.

• One side of the bridge will be removed and reconstructed during the first stage, while the opposite side of the bridge will be removed and reconstructed during the second stage. Temporary traffic signals will be installed.

Location 4: State Route 4, Silver Creek

• Much of this section of Route 4 between Route 89 and Ebbetts Pass is bicycle accessible.

• Existing bridge rail will be replaced, then existing asphalt concrete will be removed from the bridge deck and polyester concrete will be installed, tying into the highway at both ends.

• One-way traffic control is planned, and motorists should expect 10-minute delays.

Construction is expected during one dry season (June 1 to October 15) at the West Fork Carson River bridges and Silver Creek Bridge. Two additional dry seasons will be needed to complete the shoulder widening and scour mitigation work at the Markleeville Creek Bridge.

The estimated $13.6 million project was awarded to Bridgeway Civil Constructors of Vacaville, CA.

Construction is scheduled to begin as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment, and/or materials and construction related issues.
