Carson City, NV…Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak signed legislation that will help align workforce training and programs offered by community colleges in Nevada, to ensure that Nevadans are trained and ready for jobs of the future. The Governor proposed the concept, which became Assembly Bill 450, during his 2021 State of the State address.
“Since I served on the Nevada System of Higher Education’s Board of Regents, I have been a staunch believer in the importance of our community colleges and ensuring we focus on supporting and expanding access to programs that can lead to immediate, good-paying jobs for Nevadans,” Gov. Sisolak said. “Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is no better time than to double down on this important work on behalf of Nevadans.
“Community colleges will remain critical to our efforts to develop Nevada’s workforce as the economy continues to expand and diversify to meet the needs of existing trades and professions and for emerging careers in our future economy. I look forward to the work that comes forward from this interim committee so we can continue to meet the needs of Nevadans,” Gov Sisolak continued.
NSHE Chancellor Melody Rose will serve as one of the co-chairs of the committee.
“I would like to thank Governor Sisolak for his leadership in sponsoring AB 450,” Chancellor Rose said. “This legislation offers a unique opportunity to bring renewed focus and resources to Nevada’s community colleges and recognizes the important role they play in Nevada’s future workforce development, economic growth, and higher education mission.”
Additionally, Governor Sisolak signed Assembly Bill 184 into law today, another proposal the Governor put forward in his State of the State speech. The legislation, sponsored by Assemblyman Jason Frierson and Assemblywoman Teresa Benitez-Thompson creates the Office of Small Business Advocacy within the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.
