Mammoth, CA….It’s a busy time for local ski racers. Last weekend there were races all over the state as the young speedsters in almost every age group chased dreams of ski racing glory. The 13 year old through adults were at the Clifford Mann Open Giant Slalom in Mammoth. The under 13 year old racers were either at Sugar Bowl, Bear Valley or Snow Summit. Some parents of multi-skier families were literally hundreds of miles apart but tied together electronically with Live-Timing.com, text messages and other ways as they followed the racers run after run.

At Mammoth on Saturday for the women Marie Johnson, from Squaw was first followed by Erika Horst from UNR and Danica Hagen from Mammoth. One of the breakout results in the field was from first year J3 Lauren Keller from Diamond Peak who skied to second in her age group and 12th overall. On Sunday Erika Horst was the top podium dweller followed by Marie Johnson in 2nd and Claire Deangeli in third. Diamond Peaks Lauren Keller backed up her Saturday’s results by climbing two spots into 10th overall.

For the men at Mammoth on Saturday the University of Nevada Reno sped to all three podium spots. Shane Collins was first followed by Bryce Wehan and Martin Harris. The story in the rest of the field was Squaws Erik Arvidsson who skied to the top spot for his age group and 7th overall in his first race back from an off season back injury. On Sunday UNR relinquished the third spot on the podium to Heavenly’s Hughston Norton, with Shane Collins again in the top spot followed by Martin Harris. One of the nice performances in the field was from Adrien Ziegler from Bear Valley’s who skied very well on both days.

For the Women at the Central Series Race in Bear Valley on Saturday: For the J5 Girls China Peak’s Caroline Cole took top honors followed by Robbie Munk from Dodge Ridge with Cassia Garrett taking the third podium spot for China Peak. For the 10-12 year old J4 women China Peak’s Ashton Peckinpah took the Gold followed by Dodge Ridges Emily Ryan with Bear Valley’s Alyx Fairman skiing to third. On Sunday for the J5 Girls Caroline Cole backed up her Saturday win. In second again was Dodge Ridges Robbie Munk. China Peak’s Viktoria Sundberg skated to third. For the J4 women on Sunday Emily Ryan from Dodge Ridge overtook Ashton Peckinpah who swapped the top spots with China Peak’s Kate Hoppe skiing to third.

The Central Series Battle for the men at the Rasmussen Classic Slalom had Dodge Ridge’s Trevor Powell and Reagan Wallis take the top spots both days for the J5 men. On Saturday Sawyer Alford had the third spot for Bear Valley with China Peak’s Griffen O’Neill taking the 3rd spot on Sunday. For the J4 Men Spencer Crist from Dodge Ridge was the cream of the crop on both days. The battle for second place was heated with Bear Valley’s first year J4 Gennady Sytnik skiing past fellow Bear Valley Skier Cooper White. On Sunday Bear Valley’s Cooper White took it up a notch to second while Teammate Gennady Sytnik dropped to third. In the field Christian Davidson and Kyle Voigtlander both skiing for Bear Valley showed they are skiing well this year with solid results.

In the hard fought Northern Series their slalom race was held at Sugar Bow. For the young J5 girls Diamond Peak’s Belle Johnson who may be young in age but skied like a Champion with convincing back to back wins. On Saturday her margin of victory was a huge 8 seconds in a very talented field. On Saturday Sengen Meyer from Squaw Valley raced to second followed by Sugar Bowl’s Sarah Hudson. On Sunday…A.J Hurt from Squaw Valley sped to second while Sarah Hudson again had the third spot. For the J4 Women on Saturday Squaw’s Annika Hansen skied to first followed by Maureen Lebel from Sugar Bowl and Amanda Pretti from Diamond Peak. Sunday for the J4 women had Sugar Bowls Maureen Lebel jumping from second to first for the win followed by Kathleen Smith from Sugar Bowl who jumped from forth on Saturday to second on Sunday. Amanda Pretti from Diamond Peak was a fast and consistent third to stay on the podium for the entire weekend. In the field first year J4s Keely Cashman who was back to back J5 Champion has moved from Bear Valley to Squaw Valley this year. She was the fastest first year J4 and showed the older girls they might have to keep an eye in their rear view mirror for the younger Keely.

For the Northern Men in the J5 battle Sugar Bowl’s Thomas Knowles took the top spot on Saturday. He was followed by Payton Norton from Heavenly and Diamond Peak’s Micheal Hartman. On Sunday the J5 battle resulted in Sugar Bowl’s Cameron Smith in first with Northstar’s Sean Kelly in second and Diamond Peak again showed podium strength from the smaller team with Mr. Hartman again in third.

In So-Cal the Southern Series Jo Tyndall Alexander Slalom had these results for the women. Saturday and Sunday’s winner with Elle Williams for Snow Summit for the J5 Girls. In Second on Suturday was Carrie Pirner from Team Mountain High. Carrie dropped to third on Sunday with Mckinley Warren from Snow Summit third on Saturday and Lyuda Panina from TMH in Second on Sunday. For the J4 Ladies…Megan McElfish from Snow Summit took the top spot both days. Followed by TMH’s Sydney Snelbaker and TMH’s Miranda Betts on Saturday and TMH’s Katelyn Pulsipher with Sydney Snelbaker again in third.

For the Southern Men in the J5 class Chase Dowty from Snow Summit was followed by Casey Felgar from TMH on both days. In third on Saturday was Alec Burton from Snow Summit and on Sunday Ty Zuber also from TMH skied into third. For the J4 Men on Saturday Emerson Warren skated away from the field followed by Johann Auer both from Snow Summit with Team Mountain High’s Dashiell Ohr in Third. On Sunday Johann Auer jumped to the top spot followed by Snow Summit teammate Chad Thomas and TMH’s Eli Wolfson in third.
