Reno Police Investigating Shooting At Hug High

Reno, NV…Shortly before 1130 am on Wednesday December 7, 2016 Washoe County School District Police dispatch reported shots fired at Proctor R. Hug High School located at 2880 Sutro Street in North Reno. When Officers arrived on scene it was discovered that a 14 year old male student was armed with at least one knife and was threatening other students. A Washoe County School District Police Officer responded to the fight and the 14 year old failed to follow the verbal commands of the Officer. The Officer discharged his service weapon, striking the student, and stopping the threat. The 14 year old was transported to a local hospital and is currently listed in critical condition.

Hug High School was placed on a “code red” lockdown for several hours while Law Enforcement Officers ensured no other threats existed on campus.

No other students or Officers were injured in this incident, and the Officer involved will be placed on paid administrative leave per the Washoe County School District Police Department’s policy.
As part of the Regional Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) Protocol, Reno Police Robbery Homicide Detectives responded to the scene and will serve as the lead investigating agency with the assistance of the Sparks Police Department and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
