The Air Quality Management Division (AQMD) of the Washoe County District Health Department wants everyone in the Truckee Meadows to have a wonderful holiday. That is why we are asking that residents refrain from burning wrapping paper, cardboard boxes and Christmas trees.

“As tempting as it may be to quickly clean up the paper by putting it in the fireplace or wood stove, residents need to remember that burning colored and metallic papers releases toxic pollutants into the air.” says Kevin Dick, AQMD Director. “People should also know that green tree branches release more pollution when burned than seasoned fire wood or wood pellets and they can also be a serious fire hazard.” Dick added that the series of storms forecast to pass through the Truckee Meadows are expected to keep air quality good. However, he asks that residents check to make sure the burn code is green by calling 785-4110 before starting a fire to make sure it is safe to burn their fireplace or woodstove.

As a reminder, Christmas trees can be recycled at the following locations from December 26 through January 17, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., with a minimum $3 donation requested to support this and other community programs.
