July 21, 2013 (South Lake Tahoe Calif./Nev.) – George Whittell High School student Jennifer Shepack of Stateline,
Nev. was announced as the recipient for the fourth annual Gene Upshaw Scholarship Award at this year’s American
Century Championship. Initiated in memory of NFL Hall of Famer and longtime NFLPA Executive Director Gene
Upshaw, the scholarship is valued at $5,000. NBC Sports and Edgewood Companies both contribute equally to the
scholarship, which is awarded to individuals possessing characteristics of leadership, community service, and
academic excellence. Terri Upshaw, Gene’s widow, was at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course to present Jennifer
Shepack with the award.

“Gene would be extremely proud to have his named linked to this scholarship,” said Mrs. Upshaw. “Gene was not
just about accomplishments, not for himself at all, it was about those around him, for the betterment of the game and
families.”

Gene Upshaw was a popular participant in the annual celebrity golf tournament that comes to Edgewood Tahoe Golf
Course each summer.

Upshaw, an admired member of the Lake Tahoe community, spent time with his family at their home in North Lake
Tahoe. Terri Upshaw, Upshaw’s wife, created the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund in 2009, which has raised nearly
$500,000 for pancreatic cancer research, quality medical treatment and care for cancer patients and their families,
sustainability and advancement of medical technology, and funding for research in areas such as traumatic brain
injury. The Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund is held by the Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation, and benefits the
Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center http://tahoecancercenter.com/ and the Tahoe Institute for Rural
Health Research. Gene Upshaw (1945-2008) was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987 after playing
for the Oakland Raiders. As the executive director for the National Football League Players’ Association until his
passing in 2008, Upshaw led the charge through many controversial topics within the organization, known for his
honesty, hard work and concern for fellow players’ well-being.

“When Gene passed four years ago we created this because we wanted to ensure that his legacy lived on,” said Gary
Quinn, Vice President of Programming for NBC Sports. “We want people in this community to remember what a
great community member and leader Gene was during his career.”

Now in its 24th year, network television’s longest running celebrity golf tournament was televised by NBC Sports
live on Saturday, July 20, 2012 and Sunday, July 21 from noon-3 pm PT. Sports and entertainment superstars
including John Elway, Charles Barkley, Stephen Curry, Ray Romano, Alex Smith, Aaron Rodgers and Jerry Rice
compete for the American Century Championship cup and a purse of $600,000. Attracting over 35,000 people each
year, the tournament is one of South Lake Tahoe’s numerous large-scale events. Since its inception in 1990, the
American Century Championship has raised over $3.5 million for local and national charities.
