Reno, NV…Area law enforcement agencies are taking a proactive regional approach to enhance school safety across Washoe County in wake of the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy as well as concerns raised by predictions related to the Mayan Calendar and December 21, 2012. The Washoe County School District Police Department will be assisted by members of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department and the Nevada Highway Patrol in their efforts.

Enhanced patrols in and around Washoe County Schools will occur during the entire school day on December 21st. In addition, the Northern Nevada Counter Terrorism Center will be providing participating agencies with intelligence information, as it monitors conditions across the nation.

While no credible threats have been received in Washoe County, area law enforcement is working together to ensure the safety and security of students and faculty. Residents are asked to report any suspicious activity or threats they may see or hear related to our schools to their local law enforcement agency.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office celebrated 150 years of proud service and community partnership in 2011. Sheriff Michael Haley is the 25th person elected to serve as the Sheriff of Washoe County. His office continues to be the only full service public safety agency operating within northern Nevada and is responsible for operating the consolidated detention facility, regional crime lab, Northern Nevada Counter Terrorism Center, Internet Crimes against Children Task Force, court security, service of civil process, traditional street patrols and Regional Animal Services.
