19-Year-Old Bicyclist Run Over By Unlicensed Driver

South Lake Tahoe, CA…On June 18, 2012 at 11:45am this morning, nineteen year old South Lake Tahoe resident Anna Molina and her step sister were peddling their bicycles westbound on Tamarack Avenue. As Molina crossed into the intersection of Blackwood Avenue, a Chevy pickup truck traveling northbound at about 20mph on Blackwood Avenue collided with Anna Molina’s bicycle. This truck was being driven by an unlicensed 17- year-old girl. The truck ran over Molina and her bicycle. Molina was caught under the truck. The truck veered off of west side of Blackwood Avenue and rolled onto some small boulders, which lifted the weight of the truck off of Molina’s body. Molina was still under the truck when officers and paramedics arrived. Paramedics from SLTFD rescued Molina from under the truck and tended to her welfare. Molina was awake and able to speak. She was taken by ambulance to the Heavenly Ski Resort, where a CalStar helicopter flew her to Renown Medical Center in Reno. Molina sustained visible external injuries, but her medical condition is currently unknown. The juvenile driver will be cited for a misdemeanor violation of driving while unlicensed.

The investigation is still ongoing in an effort to determine whether or not Anna Molina stopped at the posted stop sign at this intersection, as bicyclists and motor vehicles are both required to do. Molina was not wearing a helmet, nor was she legally required to do so due to her age. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision.
