Alpine County, CA…The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has temporarily closed both the northbound and southbound directions of State Route 89 from the Route 88 junction in Woodfords to Route 4 due to the Tamarack Fire.

In Mono County, Monitor Pass/Route 89 has been partially reopened, allowing motorists access to Route 89 from U.S. Highway 395 to the junction of Route 4. Route 4 is open west of the Route 89/4 junction.

Please Note: Caltrans may reclose the road should conditions change.
The fire reportedly was started by a lightning strike on Sunday, July 4, 2021, and had burned more than 23,000 acres and was zero percent contained as of Monday, July 19, 2021, according to the U.S. National Forest Service.
Markleeville, Grover Hot Springs and campground area, Shay Creek, Marklee Village, Alpine Village, Woodfords, East Fork Resort and the community of Hung A Lel Ti are under evacuation.

There is no estimated time when the highway will be reopened.  For the latest road conditions, visit quickmap.dot.ca.gov.

Please avoid the area if at all possible. But if you must travel, slow down and drive with caution as fire crews continue to work.
