Caltrans Crews Completed Cleaning, Repairing & Have Opened Hwy 4 over Ebbetts Pass for Summer!

Alpine County, CA…The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) removed the winter snow, cleared debris and made necessary repairs to open State Route 4 over Ebbetts Pass for the summer season at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12, 2021.

Each year, District 10’s goal is to reopen Monitor, Sonora and Ebbetts passes no later than the Friday prior to Memorial Day weekend. Late-season storms, snow accumulation and resources sometimes hinder this goal.

However, due to light rain and snow this year, District 10 was able to open Monitor Pass on April 9, Sonora Pass on May 6 in time for Mother’s Day weekend, and Ebbetts Pass well before Memorial Day weekend.

District 10’s top priority is safety for the traveling public. Though Monitor, Sonora and Ebbetts passes are open, motorists still should be prepared for emergencies as the weather and road conditions can change rapidly.

Caltrans crews responsible for the road opening extend their best wishes for safe traveling to those who enjoy the recreational opportunities the Sierra Nevada Mountains have to offer.

Ebbetts Pass was designated as a California State Scenic Highway in 1971 and was similarly honored with National Scenic Byway status on September 22, 2005. It is one of only seven nationally so-designated byways in California, and of 151 in the entire nation.
