Lake Tahoe Guide To Amgen Tour of California Cycling Competition

South Lake Tahoe, CA…Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women’s Race empowered with SRAM at Lake Tahoe, May 11-12. The competition is part of the Union Cycliste International’s Women’s WorldTour, denoting the highest caliber racing events in the world. Race presenter AEG, the world’s leading sports and live entertainment company, created routes that will challenge the world’s top female cyclists in Lake Tahoe. The 120+ athletes will vie for the coveted jersey with the overall start (May 11) in Lake Tahoe, Stage 2 (May 12) at Lake Tahoe/Carson Valley, Stage 3 in Elk Grove (May 13) and the finale in Sacramento (May 14).

Women’s Stage 1 start/finish in South Shore 72.7 mile circumnavigation of the lake
Women’s Stage 2 start/finish in South Shore 67.1 miles heads toward Luther Pass, descends into the Carson Valley and climbs back into the Tahoe Basin over Kingsbury Grade.

WHEN:
May 11 and 12: both days the start/finish line festival is from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
May 11: Stage 1 race start approximately 10:40 a.m. with finish at 1:50 p.m. Awards follow.
May 12: Stage 2 race start approximately 10:25 a.m. with finish at 1:50 p.m. Awards follow.

WHY:
Lake Tahoe is a leading cycling destination that attracts top athletes and Olympians from around the world including 120+ cyclists competing in the Amgen Tour of California. These champions will climb, descend and break away along steep and winding stretches of the Sierra at speeds up to 50 mph.

NOTES:
Temporary Road Closures
Event organizers plan for minimal traffic delays, Thursday, May 11 between 10:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. and Friday, May 12 between 10:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. with rolling road closures. Residents, businesses and visitors are encouraged to host viewing parties and cheer for racers as they pass. Officials advise to plan for 30 minutes on each side of an intersection and one hour on Spooner Summit/Highway 28 for Thursday, May 11 and Kingsbury Grade for Friday, May 12.
May 11: Highway 28 to Incline Village will be closed from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Through traffic will be held at Spooner Summit at 1 p.m.
May 12: Through traffic at Kingsbury Grade will be held at 12:30 p.m.

Event Details
The free festival features exhibitors, family activities, cancer and cardiovascular awareness education, and food/beverage for purchase. There is designated parking at Heavenly’s California Base Lodge. Attendees are encouraged to carpool or bike.

TIME CHANGE: Strider Race for tikes ages 2-5 years old is at the event, Friday, May 12. They will cross the same finish line as the athletes. Each child participating will receive a Strider Medal and an Amgen Tour of California goodie bag. Race is at 12:30 p.m. Register online at www.amgentourofcalifornia.com/strider.
