UPDATE ON TOPAZ RANCH ESTATES FIRE

Topaz Ranch, NV…The fire has grown to 6,600 acres burned. 2 homes and 17 outbuildings have been reported damaged or burned from the fire. No personnel injuries have been reported or discovered.

The fire continues to burn in the hills to the north and east of the Topaz Ranch Estates residential area. The fire is approximately 10% contained, and firefighters are continuing to battle the fire from the ground and air.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire was caused by a private residential open burn which exceeded the regulatory limitations and permit requirements, including the ignition of materials not allowed under the regulations.

The mutual investigation is continuing with the Nevada State Fire Marshall, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Bureau of Land Management.

A Western Great Basin National Type-II incident management team has been requested and is responding to manage the incident. Transition of command is estimated to be accomplished by 6:00 am on Thursday, May 24th, 2012.

With the Memorial Day Weekend coming up, citizens are also reminded to be cognizant of the extreme fire danger posed by this latest dry winter. Please be responsible if utilizing a campfire, and ensure extinguishment of the fire is thorough and complete.
