Holiday Happenings at the Wilbur D. May Museum

Here is a rundown of holiday events and closures scheduled for Washoe County’s Wilbur D. May Museum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park:

Closed Thanksgiving Week

The museum will be closed from Sunday, November 20 through Tuesday, November 29, 2011 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The museum will resume regular hours of 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Wednesday – Saturday beginning on Wednesday, November 30, 2011.

Just in time for the holidays, the museum store will be hosting a special Holiday Sale during the first two Saturdays in December to coincide with these special events:

Tuba Christmas and Sierra Watercolor Society Open House

The museum’s annual Tuba Christmas and Sierra Watercolor Society Open House is scheduled for Saturday, December 3, 2011. The Watercolor Society’s Open House is from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and features a Society exhibit by local artists that is on display at the museum through December 15.

The museum’s annual free Tuba Christmas Concert is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and features holiday carols arranged in four part harmony performed by local tuba, baritone, and euphonium players. All area tuba, baritone, and euphonium players are invited to participate. Registration begins at 12:30 followed by rehearsal at 1 and the concert at 3 p.m.

Children’s Holiday Art Workshop

Sierra Watercolor Society offers a free holiday watercolor workshop for children age 7 to 12 from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2011. The workshop is limited to 50 children. Call the May Museum at (775) 785-5961 to sign up.

Gingerbread Festival and Contest on Saturday, December 10.

This year’s Gingerbread House Festival will be held at the Wilbur D. May Museum from 12:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2011. Activities include free museum admission, a holiday Gingerbread House Contest and crafts. A tree lighting and caroling will take place at the conclusion of the event.
