ALL RIVER ACTIVITIES ARE RISKY SPORTS WHERE BOTH KNOWN AND UNKNOWN
DANGERS EXIST. USE EXTREME CAUTION DURING HIGH RIVER FLOWS.

Please follow these tips:

1. WEAR A PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE (PFD) AT ALL TIMES

  • A Coast Guard rated Type III or V PFD (lifejacket) that is designed for paddle sports is preferable
  • Type III water skiing vests or horseshoe type vests are not designed or appropriate for class III river trips (whitewater)
  • Look for flotation ratings above 20lbs if you are not a strong swimmer or familiar with swimming in a river

2. WEAR THE APPROPRIATE CLOTHING

  • The water is extremely cold
  • Wear wetsuits or drysuits with insulation
  • Avoid cotton – it is non-insulating
  • Wear capilene, wool, fleece or another synthetic insulating fabric

3. AVOID ONE BOAT TRIPS

  • Practice rescue drills with the other members of your party ahead of time
  • Join another group if you have only one boat

4. NO ALCOHOL

  • Don’t combine alcohol and being on the river. You will need all of your wits about you to prevent or respond to accidents.
